How Johnny Lingo Changed My Life
So a couple weeks ago, I was having a bad day. I seem to be having these a lot lately. That day for mutual, we were going as a ward to do baptisms for the dead. So I figured I could get answers at the temple. I needed to know what I had to do. I felt like I was staying in the same place, not moving forward, and not progressing. I didn't know what I needed to do to be back to my normal happy self. I don't know what's been wrong with me lately. But I got my answer. Want me to share? Okay...I will. (Whether you like it or not.)
It was actually after I was all done doing baptisms.I was sitting in the chapel waiting for everyone to get done, and we were watching "Johnny Lingo". I don't know if you guys have seen it, but I've probably seen it a million times, and I never get sick of it. But this experience was extra special.
Johnny Lingo takes place on an island. Whether it's Samoa, Tonga, or Hawaii, I don't know. They have this tradition where when a man is asking a girl's father if he can marry their daughter, he offers cows as a dowry. If you are a 2 or 3 cow wife, you are pretty special. If you are a 5 cow wife, you are extraordinary and that is something to brag about. Well, Johnny Lingo comes into town and asks Mohana's father if he can marry Mohana. Mohana is known as the ugly girl in the village. She's pretty shy, and homely looking, but Johnny wants to marry her. He offers 8 cows for Mohana! This has never happened before. Mohana's father says that he would've gladly accepted one cow that gave sour milk.
The sad about this, is that the whole village makes fun of her. And she believes that she is ugly and a nobody. At the end of the movie, you see Mohana, and she is beatiful. She isn't shy, and she is finally accepted. A man asks Johnny Lingo what changed. He says that he's always loved Mohana, ever since they were little. He said that she was always beautiful. He said that Mohana was worth more than any other woman on the island, because he loved her. And once she believed she was an 8 cow wife, everyone else would.
My problem was that I didn't believe that I was an 8 cow woman. Why not? I am a daughter of God. And He loves me unconditionally. So why not act like it? Why not live like I'm worth 8 cows? Once I believe that I'm an 8 cow woman, everyone else will. And then I don't have to worry. As long as I live like I believe that, meaning that I do everything in my power to prove to my Heavenly Father that I believe Him, as well as love Him back, I can be happy. As long as I shine my light, and live the gospel to the best of my ability, I am an 8 cow woman. And I deserve to believe that. And so do you.
And so do you.
